Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s game and is now classified as week-to-week, according to reports from Tea Sports and NFL Network.
Mahomes exited the Chiefs’ 21-7 victory against the Cleveland Browns in the fourth quarter, with Carson Wentz taking over in his absence. He was seen limping as he left the field at the conclusion of the match.
“Patrick has sustained an injury to his right ankle. It is not fractured, but he is experiencing discomfort,” stated Kansas City head coach Andy Reid following the game. “He will begin his rehabilitation process, and we will monitor his progress closely. It will be assessed on a daily basis. He likely could have returned to play; he expressed a desire to do so, but it was unnecessary.”
After the game, Mahomes remarked that he believed he could have re-entered the match, but concluded that allowing Wentz to finish was the more prudent choice.
The Chiefs have improved their record to 13-1, establishing a two-game advantage over the Buffalo Bills for the top position in the AFC. They are scheduled to play two games within the next ten days.
Kansas City will face the Houston Texans on Saturday, followed by a matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
Patrick Mahomes has previously played through a high ankle sprain, which he sustained during a divisional round playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in January 2023. He missed one quarter of that game but returned to play, not missing any further time throughout the playoffs, ultimately leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.
In the game on Sunday, Mahomes completed 19 of 38 passes for a total of 159 yards and two touchdowns. This season, he has amassed 3,348 passing yards, along with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
