The New York Yankees have secured their place in the World Series by defeating the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.

This marks a significant return to the pinnacle of baseball for the Yankees, who last appeared in the World Series in 2009 when they emerged victorious. Although a 15-year absence may not seem extensive, it matches the franchise’s record for the longest interval between championship appearances.

In the upcoming World Series, the Yankees will compete against either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the New York Mets. The sixth game of the National League Championship Series, in which the Dodgers currently lead the Mets 3-2, is scheduled for Sunday evening.

The Yankees’ advancement to the Fall Classic was fueled by crucial contributions from their lineup, particularly from designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, alongside a nearly flawless performance from the bullpen, despite a setback in Game 3 against the Guardians.

Initially trailing 0-2, the Yankees found their momentum when Stanton hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, leveling the score and pushing the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th inning, Juan Soto clinched the victory for the Yankees with a three-run homer, coming with two outs.

The Guardians were unable to respond.

Following the triumph, Soto remarked that his team “did a really good job here.”

“We were grinding. We were working hard. Now we are the best team in the American League,” he stated.

Soto praised the Yankees as “the best in the game” and expressed that the opportunity to lead his team to the World Series is “the best feeling.”

“We possess all the talent necessary to go all the way,” Soto concluded, emphasizing that “we’re really sticking together.”

The players are motivating one another and expressing a strong sense of positivity, stating, “We have a World Series to win.”

Although the Yankees have not participated in the World Series recently, they have consistently reached the playoffs, making it to five championship series in the years 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

Their last three defeats in the championship series came against the Houston Astros, a team that has established itself as the most formidable competitor in the American League over the past decade.

General Manager Brian Cashman remarked that “any opportunity to compete in the World Series is remarkable,” further asserting, “We are exactly where we should be.”

He expressed gratitude, stating he was “thanking God” when Soto scored during the top of the 10th inning.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the Guardians for their commendable effort in the ALCS but noted that the Yankees displayed “a bit more grit in the end.”

Outfielder Aaron Judge emphasized that the team possesses “something special.”

“That’s the essence of the game. That’s what you strive for throughout the season,” Judge remarked. “For moments like this.”
