The Dallas Cowboys have announced that head coach Mike McCarthy will not return for the upcoming season. McCarthy’s five-year contract, which was set to expire soon, will not be renewed.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shared insights into the decision, stating, “Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover. However, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.” He expressed gratitude towards McCarthy and his family for their contributions to the community.

During his tenure with the Cowboys, McCarthy achieved a record of 49 wins and 35 losses, with a winning percentage of .583, ranking fourth in franchise history. Although he led the team to three consecutive 12-5 seasons from 2021 to 2023, McCarthy struggled in the playoffs, securing only one victory out of four attempts.

As the Cowboys prepare for a new chapter, they will begin their search for a new head coach immediately.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a challenging 7-10 season. After starting with a mixed record, splitting their first six games, the team faced a significant setback in Week 9 when quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury during a loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Despite this, Dallas managed to finish the season with a 4-5 record after a 3-5 start.

The Cowboys are now looking for a new head coach, marking only their third such hire since the 2011 season. Prior to McCarthy, Jason Garrett held the position from midway through the 2010 season until 2019.Reports suggest that McCarthy is expected to be a candidate for other coaching positions during this cycle, with teams like the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints showing interest. Before joining the Cowboys, McCarthy was head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018, where he compiled a record of 125-77-2 and led the team to a Super Bowl victory following the 2010 season.

In total, McCarthy’s career record stands at 174-112-2, including an 11-11 playoff record, placing him 12th on the NFL’s all-time wins list.
