Jamie was selected by the Dallas Stars (129th overall) from the Victoria Grizzlies of the Junior A British Columbia Hockey League in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (BCHL). He began his major junior career with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL after being drafted. In just 56 games in 2008–09, he advanced to a team-high 46 goals, 36 assists, and 82 points after scoring 65 points in his debut season in 2007–08.

Jamie led the Rockets to the 2009 Ed Chenoweth Cup victory after being selected to the WHL West First All-Star Team. He scored 33 points in the playoffs to lead the team. Jamie scored four goals and added an assist against the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the second round-robin game of the 2009 Memorial Cup tournament in Rimouski, giving the Rockets a 6-4 victory and a spot in the championship game. Despite Jamie’s Rockets’ 4-1 loss to the Windsor Spitfires in the championship game, he and teammate Tyler Myers were both selected to the tournament all-star team.

Dallas Stars

On October 11, 2009, Jamie scored his first NHL goal against Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo after being added to the Stars’ roster for the 2009–10 campaign. Late in the game, he made it 3-3, but the Stars lost the subsequent shootout. Jamie seized the chance to assume a leadership position with the team in February 2011, following teammate Brad Richards’ concussion, and went on to have a career-high 10-game point streak that included a 6-game goal-scoring streak.

After returning from injury on February 22, 2011, Jamie helped the Stars’ late-season quest to regain a playoff spot by scoring 23 points in his final 23 games. Jamie had the opportunity to serve as the Stars’ alternate captain in November 2011 while Brenden Morrow was out with an injury.

Jamie was chosen to play in the NHL All-Star Game in 2012. Jamie said he would play in the game despite though he had an appendectomy and missed numerous games in the lead up. Jamie competed in the Accuracy Shooting event during the SuperSkills Competition, defeating Steven Stamkos in the first leg and Philadelphia Flyers rookie Matt Read in the finals with times of 13.583 and 10.204 seconds, respectively.

On October 2, 2012, he agreed to a deal with the Hamburg Freezers of the German DEL for the duration of the dispute after the NHL lockout in 2012–13 delayed the start of the 2012–13 season. Before re-signing to a five-year, $26.25 million contract on January 24, 2013, Jamie missed the first four games of the NHL’s truncated season due to inability to reach an agreement with the Stars. Jamie was chosen the sixth captain of the Dallas Stars on September 19, 2013.
